✦ Synopsis

The theory describing electrochromism for an E state is presented. It is shown that the electroabsorption spectrum for a transition to a doubly degenerate or near-degenerate state in a molecule with D, symmetry exhibits a component proportional to the second derivative of the field-free lineshape. The theory is used to interpret recent experiments on Ru (diimine):+ complexes.
