โฆ Synopsis
Interest in capillary electrochromatography has exploded in the past few years. But is this new technique a revolution in the practice of liquid chromatography (LC), or is it merely a niche technique that will eventually have limited application in modern analytical laboratories? Traditional, pressure-driven LC is not broken.
The birth of modern liquid chromatography is generally taken to be 1969. In January of that year, the Journal of Gas Chromatography officially changed its name to Journal of Chromatographic Science in recognition of the renewed interest in this technique. For 9 consecutive years from the late 1970s to the late 1980s, liquid chromatographs led all other instruments in growth rate in an annual survey taken by Industrial Research and Development magazine. Liquid chromatography is now a mature technique and is quite likely the most used method of analysis for solutes in solution. Despite this, there remains one serious limitation: a frustratingly low peak capacity.
