✦ Synopsis
We studied the direct and indirect electrochemical reduction of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) by cyclic voltammetry in the presence of Co(II)Salen as catalyst in organic and aquo-organic solutions. We also studied the degree of dechlorination of HCB by direct electrolysis under different experimental conditions (i.e., potential, organic-water content, catalyst addition). Product analysis was performed by high-pressure liquid chromatography using a UV detector (HPLC-UV). The system containing the catalyst and water favors the HCB-reduction kinetics and the generation of practically only 1,3-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, and benzene.
