โฆ Synopsis
Stage-n Fe&GICs (n = 2,3) prepared in the standard two-zone method were oxidized galvanostatically in H,SO,. The electrode potential vs. electric quantity curves observed during the treatment and the X-ray powder patterns of the products showed clearly the intercalation of H,SO, into FeCI,-GICs and the formation of the graphite bi-intercalation compounds (GBCs) of FeCI, and H,SO,. The 2 axis repeat distance I, of the GBCs, 17.38& from the stage-2 FeCI,-GIC was equal to the sum of those of FeCI,-GIC, 9.38& and of H,SO,-GIC. 8.00.& From the stage-3 FeCI,-GIC the compound with Z, of 25.38A (= 9.38A + 8.OOA + B.OOA), through the intermediate with I, of 20.73a (= 9.38A + 3.35A + B.OOAj. The electrochemical reduction of these GBCs suggested that the intercalation of HZSOI into Fe&GICs is reversible.

The results of this paper have shown that the ternary stage-2 CrO,PH,SO,-graphite intercalation compound is electrochemically formed on the subsequent intercalation of H,SO, into the host stage-5 CrO,-GIG/graphite matrix. The preparation of graphite-alkali metal-solvent or graphite-N&-solvent ternary intercalation compounds by electrochemical reduction of graphite is described. The reduction occurs stagewise and the complete formation of a defined stage can be recognized by a striking change in the potential of the g
