✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The effect of propargyl alcohol (2‐propyn‐1‐ol) on the corrosion of carbon steel was studied in hydrochloric acid solutions of various concentrations (1, 2, 5%) at 40°C and 60°C. The rate of corrosion was measured electrochemically using a polarisation technique. The results obtained showed that the rate of dissolution of carbon steel is considerably decreased by propargyl alcohol in aqueous hydrochloric acid solutions at 40°C and 60°C. Capacitance measurements indicated that the inhibitor species are adsorbed to the steel‐solution interface to a greater extent in the range of negative polarisations. On the basis of impedance spectroscopy measurements the characteristics of the adsorption were separated from those of the electron transfer process. It was established that the chemical processes play an important role in the protecting effect of the inhibitor.
