✦ Synopsis
A comparison of the behaviour of commercial electrochemical manganese dioxide (y_MnO,) and non-stoichiometric anodic Mn,O,(OH), was made. Anodic oxide proves to he composed mainly by MnO, (ramsdellite) and MnOOH (manganite), and contains more water and OH-than y-MnO,. Hydroxide ions were shown to determine the ionic conductivity of Mn,O,(OH), which, in turn, strongly affects the rate of electroreduction.

Preliminary results on electrochemical and structural properties of the cation deficient oxide Mnr.sOd system are discussed in terms of its viability as an electrode for rechargeable lithium batteries. Chronopotentiometric measurements show two well-defined steps in the potential range of 3.5 V-2.0
