✦ Synopsis

Graphite electrodes were coated with [Ru(bpy),(poly(44nyIpyridine))CI]Cl and were photolysed in different electrolytes. Upon photolysis the coordinated Cl-was exchanged with HsO with reaction rates depending on the supporting electrolyte and the light intensity [Ru(bpy),(PVP)CI]+ + H,O 1; [Ru(bpy)2(PVP)(HIO)]2+ +CI-. Similar experiments with [Ru(bpy)s(PVP)sJCIs instead of [Ru(bpy)s(PVP)Cl]Cl also Icad to the aquocomplex. The ligand exchange reactions could be monitored by cyclic voltammetry. Blank tests showed that thermally induced ligand exchange is much slower than the photochemical reaction.
