✦ Synopsis

The electrochenucal actlvlty of iron polyphthalocyanmes (pPcFe) syntheslzed from pyromelhtlc dlanhydnde (PMDA) or tetracyanobenzene (TCB) and dlcyanobenzene (DCB) or TCB and dlcyanonaphthalene (DCN) or by condensation of octamethoxyphthalocyamne has been examined for the oxygen reduction reaction m 4N sulphunc acid.

It was found that pPcFe denved from PMDA has the highest actlvlty and that the temperature dependence6 of electrical conductlvlty m vacuum and oxygen of the polyphthalocyarunes studied are dfferent. A linear dependence of electrochemical actlvlty on electrical conductlvlty and on conductlvlty actlvatlon energy has been stated to exist. From the expenmental data it was deduced that negatively charged adsorption centres exist, and that the electrochemical propertles of pPcFe are determined by its electrical conductlvlty The system support -uon polyphthalocyanme of higher electrical conductlvlty -shows a lower potential drop than that unth pPcFe of lower conductlvlty .

An exptimental program was conducted ta determine the catalytic activity of platinum supported on carbon for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen in phosphoric acid as a function of temperature and electrolyte concentration. The Tafel slope was found to be approximately equal to 2.3 RT/F and inde
