and the embossments are work hardened without any post embossment heat treating that would act to harden the material. It may also receive a precipitation hardening heat treatment prior to being embossed. The gaskets are said to exhibit essentially full functional recovery and full retained internal stress at temperatures up to about 540°C. The materials are stainless steels with greater than 18% Ni and 14% Cr.

This patent describes a design of butt joint for pistons rings which from the description are used as shaft seals. The rings have a stepped butt joint and one half of the joint has a surface that slopes in the circumferential direction and is engaged by the opposing half of the ring.
