โฆ Synopsis
be the cold header of a warmer exchanger (Fig. 5). This allows for significant decrease in the dimensions of the whole heat exchanger block. The possibility of leaks increases with increasing plate dimensions due to thermal stresses. To prove it is possible to obtain vacuum-tight connexions between plates and separators with large cross-sections, a block of 25 copper plates 250 ร 250 mm was built and vacuum tested under thermocycling conditions down to liquid nitrogen temperature.
The tests showed quite satisfactory results. It must be noted in conclusion that according to calculation aluminium plates can be used in many cases instead of the copper ones. At temperatures above that of liquid nitrogen this leads to a lesser fin efficiency but at lower temperatures the fin efficiency remains the same (or even higher if pure aluminium is used). The advantages of using the aluminium plates are well established. There is less difference in thermal contraction between plates and separators and they weigh less. Besides the epoxy silicon glues stick better to aluminium than to copper.
