✦ Synopsis
The electrical conductivity has been measured m the mesophases of the caesium perfluoro-octanoate-water system on ampler with a manodom*k contiguration. The conductivity is shown to be a second-rank tensor property; it is determined by the diFfusion or Cs+ ions through the mesophase structure and is thus a useful structural probe. Of special interest is the observation that. at the nematlc (Nlf) to lamellar (L) transition, he nenwtogenic d&-shaped mlcelles simply-condense on to the 1amelJa.r planes rather than aggregate into infmitely extending bimolecular lamellae. A plot of the derivative of the conductrvlty with respect to temperature ekhlblts well defined peaks which characterise the phase transitions.
