Book gives a broad overview of substations, but not very detailed. If you have anything more than a passing interesting how substations work this book will not be much use to you. I started a new job as a commisioner and this book was of little benefit to me. Not enough details on the inner workings

โฆ Synopsis
This book is organized as a series of separate articles. Each of the articles is written by a separate author and is very detailed about a particular topic. However, there is no coordination between the authors and articles. Information is scattered around throughout the book.
For example, I was interested in learning more about how transformers are used to cancel out harmonics. I consulted the table of contents with no luck. I consulted the index. I found information in 3 different chapters before I found what I needed.
Another example. I was interested in learning about the required maintenance practices for transformers. Be sure to read Chapter 3.11, Transformer Installation and Maintenance. But don't forget to read Chapter 3.2 to find out about maintenance of bushings. There is also Chapter 3.13 that covers on-line monitoring systems. And read Chapter 3.3 to find out about maintenance of load tap changers.
The index is not very useful. There are 40 sections listed referring to testing. You need to look up each one of them to find out if they are tests performed by designers and manufacturers or if they are to be performed by owners.
With all that said, the book does have very detailed information on these topics. It's just very difficult and time consuming to find what you need.
