β¦ Synopsis
A correlation of the dielectric constant of a large number of polar liquids with assumed values of the polarization per cc. calculated by ascribing to the molecules in the liquid state the electric moments obtained from measurements on the vapor and on dilute solutions in non-polar solvents suggests an empirical relation between polarization and dielectric constant: p = (e + 1)/8.5. This relation is fairly satisfactory when applied to the variation of dielectric constant with temperature and with pressure in the case of a number of polar liquids for which data are available. The meaning of such a relation in terms of the internal field in the liquid is discussed.
