✦ Synopsis

A new technique has been developed for the formation of gas-phase electrons and ions by electric field assisted thermal desorption ionization at atmospheric pressure. Experiments were carried out using a sharp tungsten wire tip coated with a thin solid sample film which was irradiated by a 10.6 mm infrared laser. By applying a strong electric field on the laser-irradiated tungsten wire tip, abundant ions such as alkali ions, halide ions, and also multiply charged negative ions S 2 O 6 2Γ€ and S 2 O 8 2Γ€ , were formed.

The matrices succinic acid (butanedioc acid), caffeic acid (3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid), and 4-nitroaniline were used to obtain matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectra using a Nd:YAG-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO). The matrices were used to ionize

Fine metal or metal oxide powder as an alternative to conventional organic matrices in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) has been utilized successfully for lower molecular mass analytes, poly(ethylene glycol) 200 (PEG 200) and methyl stearate.

Sample preparation, namely finding a suitable matrix-analyte combination, has been one of the most important concerns in using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) for synthetic polymers. Herein we report the novel use of surfactants in the polymer sample preparat
