โœฆ Synopsis

Elasto-plastic deformation in layered media of dissimilar materials was investigated using the finite element method. Three interfacial conditions were studied : a perfectly bonded interface, a crack lying along an interface and a crack normal to the interface. The initiation and the rate of growth of the plastic zone depend on the stress singularities. Soft material in a layered medium can generally take a greater load than the same material in a single phase body. Case studies were presented to compare the stress solutions along the interface and to illustrate the development of plastic yielding for both plane stress and plane strain.
