โฆ Synopsis
This paper presents accurate computation of the differential cross sections for the elastic and vibrational excitation of ground state Hz by fast electrons. The electronic matrix elements are evaluated at 20 internuclear separations and proper averaging over vibrational wavefunctions is carried out. The comparison to experiment yields ex-&lent agreement. Different computational procedures sppropriate for low and moderate values of momentum transfer are compared.

Numerical calculation shows that interference between single scattering and double scattering reduces the independentatom-model cross section by l/3 at 100 eV and l/7 at 5OOeV for Nz and by somewhat larger fractions for P4.
Within a framework of the Born approximation simplified by czrtain assumptions, a procedure is given which esplicitly constructs a nonlocal potential that provides a fit to elastic: scattering data. The data arc assumed to consist of the scntterinf amplitude as a functicn of the momentum transfer ov
