## Abstract The thermoelastic properties of elastin immersed in water or in aqueous solutions of alcohols closely resemble those of typical polymers in the rubber elastic state. The evolution of heat much in excess of the work performed on elastin when it is stretched while immersed in water at ca.

โฆ Synopsis
A stress}strain model was determined for elastic parameters of the tobacco leaf that permitted comparison among leaves of di!erent characters. Tests were made (1) on leaves from three stalk positions, (2) at two rates of loading, and (3) at four nominal leaf moisture contents. Tangent modulus at the in#ection point and the secant modulus at failure were discovered to be the most de"nite basis for di!erences observed in model curves due to stalk position, loading rate and moisture contents. The coe$cients of the last two terms of the model also showed some potential as indicators of elasticity at lower moisture contents. The most e!ective separation of e!ects occurred below 20% moisture content (w.b.). Energy absorbed and stress and strain values showed variation with treatment but lacked repeatability across treatments to be used as indicators of leaf character. Elastic parameter values were a!ected by rate of loading as well as moisture content and e!ective evaluation will require identi"cation of both.

Let T ฤฑ R be the rings of integers in a number field and a finite Galois extension field. We study relations between the elasticity r(R) of the monoid of nonzero elements of R and the elasticity r(S) of the monoid S of norms to T of those elements. We show r(R) \ r(S) and that equality holds if the
