En Tom Ripley encara és un bon noi. Per això el milionari senyor Greenleaf l'envia a Europa, perquè intenti fer tornar el seu fill Dickie, lliurat a la vida bohèmia en el sud de Nàpols. Quan en Tom arriba, però, més que provar de satisfer l’encàrrec, es fa molt amic d’en Dickie, i de la seva xicota, la Marge, i es deixa seduir per la vida regalada i feliç de la parella. Comença una relació complexa entre ells i quan en Dickie, potser frívolament, el vol apartar del seu costat, en Tom reacciona amb molta, molta violència. Highsmith crea un dels personatges més memorables de la literatura de suspens, un ésser humà sensible i intel·ligent, capaç dels actes més vils, però que en cap moment ens deixa de seduir amb la seva capacitat d’improvisació. El talent de Ripley, novament traduïda al català per Ricard Biel, és la primera d’una sèrie de cinc novel·les sobre aquest personatge inquietant i amoral.
