The simplicity of his style is nowhere more conspicuous than in his numerous text bookson Lunar and Planetary 'Theory, on the Figure of the Earth, on the Calculus of Variations, on the Undulatory theory of Light, on Sound, on Magnetism &c. &c. The same characteristic made him an admirable lecturer.

The list of Airy's honours and distinctions is too long to give in detail. H e was several times President of the Royal Astronomical Society, and three times received its Gold medal. He was President of the Royal Society and received a Copley and a Royal medal. He was awarded the Lalande medal of the French Academy and was one of its eight Foreign Associates. B e was made C. B. in 187 I, and K. C. B. in 1872. In 1875 he received the Freedom of the City of London which had never before been conferred for scientific distinction. H e was decorated by the Governments of Prussia, France, Sweden, Russia, and Brazil.
