h new chemical degradation o f ( -)-kopsine is described which completely confirms the structure of this alkaloid. Correlation of ( -) -aspidofractinine, ( -)-pleiocarpine and ( -)kopsine with ( -)-minovincinc cstablishes the absolutc stcrcochemistry of these bascs. It appears that, in contrast to the aspidospcrmine group, all alkaloids containing the aspidofractinine skeleton possess the same absolute stcrcochemistrp. Die vorliegende Arbeit wurde mit dem Ziel ausgefuhrt, die Struktur 1 des heptacyclischen Alkaloids (-)-Kopsin [2] [3j durch einen weiteren chemischen Abbau zu beweisen. Dieser Abbau sollte gleichzeitig eine Verknupfung von Kopsin mit den Alkaloiden der Aspidospermin-Gruppe erbringen ; die absolute Konfiguration der letzteren ist bekannt [4] IS].
Der Kopsin-Abbau sollte rnit der oxydativen offnurig der v.-Ketol-Gruppierung (C(3)-C( )) beginnen. Natriumnietaperjodat in Wasser oder verdunnter Essigsaure griff das Alkaloid nur sehr langsarn an ; die Oxydationsprodukte bestanden zuni gros-
