✦ Synopsis

We show that transport in open quantum dots can be mediated by single eigenstates, even when the leads allow several propagating modes. The broadening of these states can be virtually independent of lead width. While sets of completely broadened states contribute to the background conductance, the states that remain resolved tend to yield periodic conductance fluctuations that are observable in experiment.
