## Abstract The direct substitution of alcohols and Ξ²βdicarbonyl compounds was catalyzed with FeCl~3~ under solventβfree conditions. The catalyst loading could be decreased to 0.01 mol% at high activities. It was shown that the reaction proceeded in two steps via the etherification of the alcohols.
