✦ Synopsis

In this paper it is shown how the matrix pencil method could be used for direction finding in 3D scenarios. To accomplish this, the wavefield is assumed to be sampled (in space and in time) by two uniform linear arrays forming a right angle (e.g., a cross array of an L-shaped array). The algorithm presented will provide estimates of azimuth and elevation angles, polarization, and average power of the narrowband incident waves, which can be coherent. To take into account wave polarization, each array sensor consists of two crossed dipoles. In addition, dipoles are chosen to be electrically small so as to diminish the undesired mutual coupling effects. 1998 Academic Press
