โฆ Synopsis
An experimental investigation of a three component system which should behave in a similar way to the system nitrogen/argon/oxygen has confirmed earlier theoretical predictions regarding efficiencies. These predictions were, firstly, that in spite of each component operating with the same 'point' efficiency the component 'tray' efficiencies can be different, and secondly, that very high tray efficiencies are achievable if the flow conditions across large sieve trays are correct. There is potential for reducing the number of trays in air separation columns if these effects are taken into account.

This Paper considers the behaviour of the distillation trays in conventional use in cryogenic air separation plants. An earlier study showed that the trays should operate at higher efficiencies than plant experience would indicate. This conclusion was based on the assumption of uniform liquid flow a
Hydrodynamics and separation performance of a sieve tray column in heterogeneous distillation are studied experimentally under total reflux conditions. A correlation for clear liquid height in the heterogeneous liquid region is obtained by modifying the correlation of the homogeneous systems. The vo
