โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

A protein complex containing IGFโ€I, purified from rabbit seminal plasma, was used to investigate its effects on the capacitation and acrosome reaction of rabbit spermatozoa. Uncapacitated sperm (Pattern F), capacitated sperm (Pattern B), and acrosomeโ€reacted sperm (Pattern AR) were determined by CTC staining, and the results were validated by PSAโ€staining. The addition of the IGFโ€I complex to the capacitative medium directed the spermatozoa to spontaneous acrosome reaction. On the other hand, IGFโ€I complex, added to capacitated spermatozoa, acted as inducer of the acrosome reaction. Results of IVF experiments showed high rates of fertilization with capacitated spermatozoa, acrosomeโ€reacted by either A23187 or IGF I complex, whereas significantly lower rates were obtained with spermatozoa capacitated in the presence of IGFโ€I complex. The acrosome reaction (AR) is a regulated exocytotic process. In several cell types, an actin network situated under the plasma membrane (PM) acts as a physical barrier to prevent this exocytosis. In seeking a function for a cortical skeleton in guinea pig spermatozoa, the PM and the outer acrosomal

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein (IGFBP)-3 effects proliferation and differentiation of numerous cell types by binding to insulin-like growth factors (IGF) and attenuating their activity or by directly affecting cells in an IGFindependent manner. Consequently, IGFBPs produced by specific c

The isthmo-optic nucleus (ION) of chick embryos is a model system for the study of retrograde trophic signaling in developing CNS neurons. The role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is well established in this system. Recent work has implicated neurotrophin-4 (NT-4), glial cell line-derive
