✦ Synopsis
Polarized and depolarized light-scattering spectra of 4-cyano-4'-penthylbiphenyl (5CB) were measured for binary mixtures of 5CB and triphenyl phosphite (TPP). The coupling parameter R between translational and rotational degrees of freedom for 5CB was determined as a function of the temperature and of the concentration of TPP, added as a diluent. R is found to be almost independent of the temperature, whereas it decreases linearly with the concentration of TPP; it is close to zero below ca. 10 mole % of TPP. The present results on the effect of the diluent on R are compared with those in a previous work on the binary system 5CB and CC14 (diluent). The behavior of R is interpreted in terms of the local structure of 5CB, probed by 1H-and 13C-NMR.
