✦ Synopsis

Experimental data relating to standard rates of loading are studied on concrete control specimens 28 days after casting. Normal concrete with an oven-dry density in the range 2000-2800 kg/m3 is used for the specimens. The rates of compression are about 0.3 N/mm*/sec, or a strain rate of about 30 x 30m6/sec and the corresponding rates of tension are 0.03 N/ mm2/sec or 3 x IO-b/set. Examples of stress-strain relationships are given. The effects of stress and strain rates are discussed. The development of strength with time under sustained loads is considered, at ambient and elevated temperatures. The total creep and shrinkage strains are obtained by a simple process of addition. The influence of age on creep at loading and the development of shrinkage with time are examined.

Still unresolved is the question regarding the mechanism which controls the velocity of free dislocations in b.c.c. metals and is thus responsible for the strong temperature dependence of the yield and flow stress. A variety of inorganic fillers are investigated to determine their impact on the response of filled polysiloxane elastomers to cyclic stress in hot air and in hot poly(dimethylsiloxane) PDMS fluid environments. Three fillers stabilize the polysiloxane networks to cyclic stress: zinc oxide, tin oxide
