✦ Synopsis

There nre two sewage outfalls along the Jordanim coastline in the Gulf of Aqabn. Dming 1982 and 1983 a total of 328 core samples (0.01 ma to a depth of 15 cni) were collected from the tivo outfells, two ront.ro1 stations which resemble the outfnlls in depth and sediment test, ure. m d from t w o stations 100 in on both sides of ettch outfell. E'annal imalysis revealed that the total number of individuals, nnmber of species, species richncss, and fa,iinal sirnilnrities of niacrobent, liic inverte.bretes mere lower a t the sewage outfall near the phosphttte 1o;ding port tlmn the control sttition during hot,h collections. A t t>he 100 In stations, the numbers of indivitliiiils were generally higher than the sewage nnd cont, rol st,nt,ions. The iiuinber of species. however, xvas highest >tt the control station a.nd lowest at the sewage outfall.

A t the ot.her setlage out.frtll, where the sewage effluent is discharged sporadically, no metistirable effects on niacrohentliic invertebrates were found.
