✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Parathyroidectomy of larval and metamorphosing tadpoles of Rana catesbeiana caused significant decrease in Ca concentrations in serum and coelomic fluid, although their Na levels did not show significant changes. These results suggest that the parathyroid gland of the tadpole plays an important role in the elevation of Ca level in larval stages as well as in adults.

We describe a novel mutualism between bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana) and a tadpole-specific gastrointestinal nematode (Gyrinicola batrachiensis). Groups of tadpoles were inoculated with viable or nonviable nematode eggs, and development, morphology, and gut fermentation activity were compared
