✦ Synopsis

The subject of reducing the tangential tension (from 30 to 10 N) of 3-piece oil rings for gasoline engines was analyzed through measurements of oil consumption, friction, ring motion, and oil "lm thickness (LIF Method). Although oil consumption increases under high engine speed operation with tension reduced oil rings, setting the ring width, h , to 2.0 mm decreased the oil consumption signi"cantly. Analysis of this phenomenon reveals sealing ability on the side surfaces at oil ring and piston motion during the intake stroke to be the key issues. Further reduction in the tangential tension of oil rings is possible through this improvement.
