✦ Synopsis

A structural transition at about 60 K occurs in La2_,,Ba~CuO 4 only around x = 1/8, accompanied by suppression of superconducting transition temperature T o. Partial substitution of smaller divalent ions for Ba 2÷ ions (Ba 2÷ > Sr 2÷ > Ca 2÷ ) leads to suppression of this low-temperature structural transition. The structural transition temperature is scaled quantitatively with the average size of divalent ions. Furthermore, this dependence corresponds well to chemical pressure effects.
