The catfish, H. fossilis, survives for long periods after hypophysectomy, although with impaired osmoregulatory mechanisms. Plasma osmolarity and cortisol levels decline significantly within 2 hr after hypophysectomy and attain the lowest values by about 27 hr. Hypophysectomy also results in a marke
