✦ Synopsis


The differential water use efficiency of maize crops grown during the summer and autumn period, in the central coastal plain of Israel, is analyzed in the light of the difference in radiative conditions and its effect on crop behaviour. Water-use efficiency appears to be adversely affected by high values of total radiation. Other environmental factors, such as soil fertility, have on the other hand a positive effect on water use efficiency, and this could be used as criterium in determining fertilizer application quantities in regions with limited water resources and high fertilizer costs.
