IO-adwrpti& found for Zp a+ and NH: ions did not hpve any effuzt upan the pH-respoaae, though a rcannrkabbefkct waaexpecte& Another pH-reqonse of -0.075 ~0.10OV.pH-' wasobtainedin NH,Cl-HQ (pH l-31 and fC,H,), NClO, -HCIO, (pIcf-2.5) solutions. This response was found to be caued bv soluble MI?* ions formed bv the well-known disproportionation reaction of Mn(III) bciig present ii the MnO, s&ptcs.

## Ah&act -The potential of synthetic beta manganese dioxides was measured in NH,CI solutions as a function of pH. Since both the dioxides were stoichiometric and the solutions dim not contain any trace of manganous ions, pH-response of the potential was expected to he -0.059V.pH-r at 25°C. Howeve
