โฆ Synopsis
This investigation considers the reaction of carbon-black agglomerates which are formed during the combustion of carbon-black slurry fuels. A monodisperse stream of agglomerates (75 ~m initial diameter) was observed in the postflame region of a flat-flame burner, operating at atmospheric pressure. Measurements yielded agglomerate mass, size, temperature, and velocity as a function of time in the burner gases. Monodisperse carbon blacks having ultimate carbon-black particle sizes of 70-300 nm and a blend having 50 % mass loading (each) of 70 and 300 nm blacks were tested. The rate of combustion of monodisperse blacks increased slightly as the ultimate carbon-black particle size was reduced. The burning rate of the carbon-black blend, however, was lower than the monodisperse blacks--yielding residence times for reaction that were 10~-50% longer at comparable conditions. It was found that the present measurements could be correlated using a variable-density, shrinking-sphere model of the process, with empirical parameters representing effects of subsurface structure of the agglomerates.
