✦ Synopsis
Growth, photosynthetic capacity and chlorophyll a content of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin were observed after exposure to the aromatic hydrocarbon 9-10 dihydroanthracene and its biodegradation products. Growth was inhibited after exposure to the aromatic hydrocarbon, whereas no inhibition occurred in the presence of the biodegradation products alone. The degradation products were found to enhance the chlorophyll a cellular content. Synergistic effects between dihydroanthracene and its biodegradation products increased the toxicity of this aromatic hydrocarbon.
