✦ Synopsis
We have investigated effective surface heat treatments and materials designed to increase the contact fatigue strength of gear teeth in terms of surface pitting endurance. The results show that the resistance to softening of the surface layer during tempering at 573 K is the most important factor. Carbo-nitriding (with a nitrogen content of 0.55 mass% or more) followed by hard shot-.peening (for instance, an arc height of 0.69 mmA), in which chromium steel with added silicon and molybdenum is used, is also found to be a very effective production technique for improving the contact fatigue strength.
