Abstract

Space‐charge electrons transport a considerable fraction of the current in magnetically insulated transmission lines (MITLs). When an MITL has geometrical discontinuity, the interaction between the disturbed electronics and the nonlinearly coupled electromagnetic field makes their behavior difficult to predict. In this paper, the power flow through such MITLs is discussed by means of a particle simulation code and an analytical model. The results show that the space‐charge electrons tend to maintain the effective impedance of the transmission line by changing the distribution and the boundary of the space charge flow. Although a fraction of the space charge flow shunts the gap when the discontinuity is larger than the critical value, the total current upstream of the discontinuity is still preserved. © 2001 Scripta Technica, Electr Eng Jpn, 135(4): 9–16, 2001
