✦ Synopsis

In the Dirac-Fock-Roothaan SCF calculations on atoms and molecules, we have variational instability due to the negativeenergy spinor admixture to the positiveenergy spinors. IVe give a prescription on how to avoid such an instabdity. The method we propose is analogous to the lagrangian multiplier technique in the pseudo-potential and open-shell SCF theories

It is noted that two kinds of basis spinors (the unified and the separated basis spinors) employed in Dirac-Fock-Roothaan calculations are equivalent. For large components of the basis spinors the separated basis spinors take simpler forms than the unified ones while for small components the reverse

Wave-operator equations associated with the determination of effective Hamiltonians are generally solved by perturbation methods. However, it is well known that for most actual systems the standard Rayleigh-Schrodinger and Brillouin-Wigner series either converge slowly or diverge. One way how to dea

The treatment of relativity and electron correlation on an equal footing is essential for the computation of systems containing heavy elements. Correlation treatments that are based on four-component Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations presently provide the most accurate, albeit costly, way of taking re

The effect of omission of two-electron integrals involving basis functions for the small component of the wavefunction on the eigenvalue spectrum in the Dirac-Hartree-Fock problem is studied. From an analysis of the Fock matrix it is shown that omission of these integrals moves the negative-energy s
