This investigation has been carried out to study the effect of ultrasound on the rate of hydrogenation of sunflower oil. Two types of catalysts were used, namely the Harshaw's Nysel DM 3 and the second one produced by the inland STZ works. The application of ultrasound increased the reaction rate by 30 to 70 per cent while keeping a sufficiently high level of selectivity. Ultrasound had no influence on trans-isomerization of fatty acids.
