Although the r61e of the thyroid in growth and differentiation of the individual is well established and its effect on the growth of some isolated tissues has been reported, its influence on growth of various parts of the body (Hammett, '27), and 011 mctaholism (Smelser, '44) of even the same tissue in different parts of the body is not n~cessarily the same. Thercfore, in a study of the significance of a number of factors involved in epithelial maintenance and repair of injuries, the importance of thyroid hormone in these proccsses in the coriica was included.
The corneal epitheliuin offers particular advantages in such studies, as tlie number of mitotic figures in a known area a i d the rate of mitoses is easily determined. It is an avascular structure so that variation in the rate of blood flow or number of capillaries in underlying tissue does not influence the rate of healing. Epithelial injuries heal rapidly and without contracture, due to the rigidity of the cornea, so that rates of epithelization, as well as of mitosis, can he readily studied.
