✦ Synopsis
Buckingham and Fairbank s describe extremely accurate measurements of the specific heat of liquid helium which show that the 2 transition is not of second order, the specific heat undergoing a logarithmic infinity superposed as a step discontinuity of -5.2 J/g/deg.K. The logarithmic infinity is too narrow to have an appreciable effect on the vapour pressure curve, and the agreement between the step discontinuity and the value obtained from the pressure derivatives is excellent. However, the second pressure derivative is very sensitive to adjustments of order 0.01 mdeg. in the calculated temperatures, so that this agreement is partly fortuitous.
