β¦ Synopsis
Measurements arc reported for the b-polarized reflection spectrum of zmthracene cry&Is off the (001) face coated with solidified layers of sozne permanent goes. In the wz~e?length range 4020 to 3800 X spz+nning the O-O vibronic transition to the fast electronic state there are sever* narow minima attributed to surface transitions. The minimum I at 3954 a is shifted 1 L ii to longer wavelengths by solidified air, whilst the rest of the spectrum exhibits little or no change. This red-shift, exvied for transitions to surface exciton states, is new evidence for the assignment of minimum I as such. In addition a new minimum at GL 3985 A has been observed on the Ion:: wavelength edge of the O-Oh reflection batd, very close to minimum If at 3984 A.
