The present study is an attempt to evaluate the protective effects of environmental chlorides (as NaC1 and CaC12) on nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia to the fresh water teleost Clarias lazera. Two aspects were investigated, including the determination of the minimum ratio of chloride to nitrite ion required to inhibit nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia, and the ability of chloride to reverse methemoglobin formation in fish previously exposed to nitrite.
