By treating NaZSM-5 zeolite with SiCl4 vapour at 723-923 K, the ZSM-5 zeolite was dealuminated. The aluminium atoms on the external surface of ZSM-5 crystallites were removed more selectively than those in the pores. More selective dealumination took place at the higher temperatures.

The selectively dealuminated HZSM-5 zeolites exhibit a higher shape selectivity for the alkylation of 1,2,4-trimethyl benzene with methanol than the parent HZSM-5. The selective dealumination reduces the aging rate for the cracking of cumene.
