โœฆ Synopsis

Up to 1.5 mol% Nb O was added to 9 mol% Y O -stabilized ZrO . According to an XRD analysis, the addition of 2 5 2 3 2 Nb O did not change the cubic structure of YSZ. As a result of the repulsion effect of the grain-boundary interface and the 2 5 preferential segregation of Y O , the Nb O segregation at the grain boundaries was not detected by EPMA. The resistances 2 3 2 5

were measured by the complex impedance approach in air, Nb O was found to increase the resistance per unit surface area 2 5

of the grain boundaries. This result suggested that the most likely mechanism of the dissolution of Nb O in YSZ should be 2 5 ? x Nb O โ†’ 2Nb 1 2e9 1 4O 1 1 / 2 O . Despite the Nb O addition, the Arrhenius equation can still be applied to the 2 5 Zr o 2 2 5

resistances.

In order to investigate the time-dependent change of activation energy for electrical conduction of Y,O,-stabilized ZrO, containing 8 mol% Y,O,, the electrical conductance of a sintered sample was measured in the range of 1090-1110ยฐC over a period of 114 days. The activation energy increased with th
