✦ Synopsis

Abstract

In this paper, the effect of mutual coupling on adaptive array antenna is investigated. Through an example of a two‐element dipole array, it is shown that the effect of the mutual coupling is detrimental on adaptive array and can not be neglected. A method proposed in the literature to compensate for the effect of mutual coupling is tested and applied successfully. Β© 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ## Abstract In this paper, a method to evaluate array patterns is presented. This method considers all the mutual‐coupling effects, and assumes that the field of an element is the sum of two distinct modes: an antenna mode and a diffraction mode. The coupling matrix is a standard way to represent the mutual-coupling effect between elements in an antenna array. In this paper, two commonly used approaches to determine the coupling matrix are examined, and their limitations are discussed. The coupling matrix obtained from the minimum mean-squar
