✦ Synopsis
Finite element model updating has become an important topic in structural dynamic applications. It leads to either correction of errors in the model or damage detection and evaluation in a structure. This paper is concerned with the second application using the sensitivity-based updating approach. An important question arises in this paper: does including the modal curvatures as modal parameters in the updating algorithm for the purpose of damage detection improve convergence? To answer this question a simply supported beam is tested using simulated data. The bending sti!nesses of the beam at di!erent positions are updated using the changes in the eigenfrequencies, the mode shapes and the modal curvatures. It is found that including the modal curvatures in the updating procedures does not improve the convergence of the algorithm.
