✦ Synopsis

The purpose of this study was to examine whether mechanical stretch altered the expression of transforming growth factor (TGF)-h1 in cultured myogenic satellite cell. C2C12 myogenic satellite cell was plated on collagenized silastic membrane and cultured in growth medium and stretched 20% elongation for 24 h. The expression of TGF-h1 was determined by semiquantitive reverse transcriptional polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. Mechanical stretch decreased myogenic regulatory factors. The expression of TGF-h1 was increased in stretched C2C12 as compared to control. This result demonstrates that mechanical stretch inhibits myogenic differentiation by an increase of TGF-h1 expression on C2C12 myogenic satellite cell.

## Abstract The present study evaluated endogenous activities and the role of BMP and transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β), representative members of the TGF‐β family, during myotube differentiation in C2C12 cells. Smad phosphorylation at the C‐terminal serines was monitored, since TGF‐β family mem
