In the present work we give a theoretical explanation of the effect of deuterium substitution on the J13cH coupling constant of a vicinal proton, in tetrahedrally hybridized carbons. The change in tlmeaveraged 2s character of the hybrid carbon orbital, due to the couplin g of the bending vibrations.
